Recently somebody asked me if I enjoy shopping at retail stores such as Zara and Target. I thought it was an unusual question until I realized how I don’t shop at these stores as often as others. I started thinking why I don’t, and it dawned on me – I am often able to buy a higher quality alternative at an equivalent (and sometimes even lower!) price by shopping sales at retailers of higher quality.
Don’t get me wrong, I will purchase clothing from just about anywhere if I like the design, but I prefer to focus on quality over quantity for classic pieces that will not fall out of style within a season or two. Spending more on higher quality clothing can quickly add up though, and it is fair to say that most of us do not have an unlimited budget for office attire. During college, I started learning the art of sale shopping. By the time I got out of school, I developed a simple rule for myself:
I do not pay full price for clothing unless a certain brand never goes on sale or I need something ASAP and cannot wait for a sale. Otherwise, I need to find things on sale.
“Sale” to me translates to various definitions including a discounted price from the original retail price, using a discount code, or shopping a “2 for 1” type of event. Regardless, this rule has helped me curate a wardrobe I love while still helping me keep to a budget. So, without further ado, I would like to introduce you to “Friday Favorites”.
Every Friday, I will post some office outfits. The fun part? The items within the outfits will be affordable clothing often at a discount from various retailers. I love shopping sales, and I love to share my finds even more. My hope is this series helps readers develop a wardrobe they love while saving them some money along the way.
Outfit 1: Textured Flare Pants.
Flared pants started trending this time last year. While many thought the trend wouldn’t last long, it is safe to say the style is still desired. To create variety in a wardrobe, I recommend purchasing pants in a variety of cuts, colors, and style. These pants caught my attention as they offer a different approach to your traditional trouser. The flair cut adds some trend, and the blue color is fresh and light for summer. After the discount code, the pants ring up to $30.
Style the pants with a floral patterned blouse. I think the colors within the blouse tie in well with the color of the pants. For accessories, I would stick to neutral colors to avoid creating an outfit that may seem busy otherwise. I think nude pumps and a structured handbag would work well. For jewelry, keep it simple with diamond studs and a your favorite watch.
Outfit 2: Plaid Pencil Skirt.
I love a good pencil skirt. They almost feel like cheating in a way. You can look so polished in them, yet they are incredibly easy to style. This skirt caught my attention while skimming the Ann Taylor sale. This option offers a unique alternative to a traditional pencil skirt with the navy and white plaid pattern. It is absolutely perfect for summer. The price makes me love it even more at $54.
I would style the skirt with a simple white blouse and some slingbacks. If you are looking for a more formal look, you can opt for a navy blazer. To finish the look off, I would select some jewelry with white accents such as these earrings.
Outfit 3: Linen-Cotton Midi Dress.
To me, the perfect summer outfit entails breathable fabric and a lighter color, which is exactly what this dress offers. While not technically white, the “stone” tone of the dress offers an off-white for those of us that struggle to wear white. The undertones of this dress result in easy styling choices with other warmer colors such as beige.
I would keep the styling for this outfit to a minimum as the dress speaks for itself with the split neckline and fabric belt. Opt for a strappy heel in a warmer tone and a gold bangle. If you are looking for some color, I would recommend Chanel’s Passe-Muraille nail polish. The warm undertones of this unique nail polish pair stunningly with this color. Complete the look with a simple updo such a messy bun. Sometimes simple is truly better!
I hope these outfits provide some work attire inspiration while also keeping your wallet happy. I would love to hear your feedback on Friday Finds, including any suggestions and what you would like featured. TGIF and happy shopping!
