To mark the start of June, I wanted to use this post to discuss a shoe trend that has been picking up a lot of traction – mules. Recently, there was a large discussion on an Instagram page I follow over whether or not mules are office appropriate. In my opinion, this is highly dependent on several factors including the dress code at your office. However, I believe there is hope for the younger, elegant cousin of a traditional loafer. Styled correctly, these shoes offer a wonderful alternative for an office shoe in the warmer months.
- Choose a simple style.
There are so many adorable mules out there, but a simple style seems the most appropriate for the office. Stick to muted colors such as a black or burgundy with little frills. The simple styles tend to give an outfit more elegance and blend a bit more, which is something to consider when opting for more casual footwear.
2. Choose a more formal outfit.
Mules with a power suit are a match made in heaven. The formalness of the suit is dressed down by the mules making for a unique business casual look. While I would not regularly wear a suit to the office given how formal the look is, I love being able to pull one off and not look overly dressed with the help of mules. Alternatively, I really enjoy the look of mules with a slim cut trouser and nice top such as a cashmere sweater or button down.
3. Try a heeled mule.
If you are still on the fence about wearing this style to the office, a mid-heeled mule is a subtle way to make the shoe slightly more formal. Try to opt for a heel not higher than 2 inches as I’ve learned the style gets difficult to walk in otherwise.
4. Ensure the rest of your look is refined.
When I wear my mules to the office, I opt for a more refined look for the rest of my outfit, even down to my lipstick color. This allows for a look to appear more put together and is considered more office appropriate. For example, as much as I love wearing bright red, I personally feel that something such as black trousers and a beige top would be more appropriate with the mules than a bold colored dress. Better said, try to not overpower the mules with the rest of your outfit.
The next time you are looking for some comfortable shoes to slip on as you rush out the door for a morning meeting, consider reaching for a pair of mules.
